Hyouka[2] (氷菓, literally, "ice cream") is a 22-episode anime produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto. It was named after the first volume of the original series, Hyouka, and made into a 22-episode televised animation series. The story follows Houtarou Oreki, a first-year high school student who meets Eru Chitanda, Satoshi Fukube, and Mayaka Ibara after joining his school's Classic Literature Club.
Hyouka was produced by Kyoto Animation, with directing by Yasuhiro Takemoto, series composition by Shoji Gatoh, and character design by Futoshi Nishiya. The opening theme played in the first half of the series was sung by ChouCho, and the opening played in the second half was sung by Saori Kodama. The ending theme of both parts of the series was sung by Satomi Satou and Ai Kayano. The main cast includes Yuichi Nakamura, voicing Houtarou Oreki, and Satomi Satou voicing Eru Chitanda. The story is set in Kamiyama, a fictional city based on Honobu Yonezawa's actual home city, Takayama.
The original 22 episodes were broadcast from April to September 2012. A bonus original video animation was streamed via Ustream in July 2012. A two-part Blu-ray edition was also released. Funimation licensed the anime and released it on home media in North America on July 4, 2017 with an English dub[3]. Later, following the acquisition of Crunchyroll by Sony and consolidation of Funimation to Crunchyroll, the series were moved to Crunchyroll. Anime Limited released it in the United Kingdom in 2017 and 2018.[4] Hyouka was commended for its visual effects, and for combining the genres of mystery and slice of life.
Plot
"Everyone wants to live their high school life to make many good memories". This high school student motto doesn't interest Houtarou Oreki. He doesn't wish to "waste" his energy on relationships, sports or other activities. Instead, what he wants is to "save his energy" by all means and spend his high school life being as plain as possible.
But his life changes when he receives a letter from his older sister Tomoe Oreki in which she wants him to enter the Kamiyama High School Classic Lit Club, which was in danger of getting disbanded as all previous members have graduated. Being afraid to refuse his sister, Oreki does so, thinking that this won't change anything in his life as he expected to be the only club member. But he finds out that he was wrong - when he enters the club room, he sees a beautiful girl, standing near the windows and looking outside. She notices Oreki and introduces herself. Her name is Eru Chitanda from Class 1-A and a member of the Classic Lit Club. After some time, his old friends Satoshi Fukube and Mayaka Ibara join this club as well.
They start investigating a case that occurred 45 years ago. Hints of the mystery are buried in an old issue of an anthology called Hyouka published by the Classic Lit Club in the 1960s.

Episodes
Hyouka aired 22 episodes from April 22 to September 15, 2012, and was broadcast on Tokyo MX, Chiba TV, Television Saitama, Television Kanagawa, KBS Kyoto, Sun Television, Gifu Broadcasting System, Mie Television, TVQ Kyushu Broadcasting, and BS11.[5][6]
Its PV was released in March 2012,[7] and the first episode was shown on April 14, 2012 at Kadokawa Cinema in Shinjuku as a special event.[8] It also received a bonus original video animation, and was streamed via Ustream on July 8, 2012. The OVA was later re-released as a Blu-ray disk along with Hyouka's third manga volume.[9][10]

Popularity
Hyouka was ranked 25th place in the NHK's "Best Anime 100" online poll.[11] On BIGLOBE's Animeone, Hyouka was ranked 1st place in the 2012 Spring Anime category.[12] Hyouka was also included in Crunchyroll Editorial's top 100 anime of the decade.[13]
Hyouka's Blu-ray BD box sold 8093 copies making it the 3rd most sold Blu-ray Disc in the week of February 23 – March 1, 2015.[14]
Events
Hyouka was used in marketing events for Gifu Prefecture and Takayama city. Gifu Prefecture's Red Cross held an event where Hyouka-themed posters and files were provided to those who donated blood.[15] City of Takayama distributed 10,000 maps showing the real-life locations which are depicted in Hyouka.[16] The show was also featured in Takayama's rice production, selling featured rice named for the Hyouka.[17] The Takayama Police produced wet tissues and clear files featuring Hyouka characters to use in their crime prevention campaigns.[18] In 2020, Anime Tourism Association organized a virtual reality tour of Hyouka's real-life locations.[19]
Hyouka celebrated its 10th Anniversary on April 22, 2022, with special logo and poster being released.[20] Hyouka-themed museum was opened in the GAMERS main store in Akihabara from May 25 to June 15, 2022.[20][21] Kujibikido partnered with Hyouka for an online lottery, providing goods to win.[22] Ameba TV streamed the first 11 episodes of Hyouka on April 22, 2022, and Gifu Broadcasting System began rebroadcasting Hyouka starting from April 6, 2022.[23] On November 17, 2022, Kadokawa released the creditless openings of Hyouka in anticipation of its 10th anniversary concert, which was held on January 29, 2023.[24]
